Southern Charmers

I'm a big fan of architecture and even though my taste is modern and minimalist I find a lot of charm in residential Southern houses. The one thing I try to avoid is the "picture of a house" syndrome. As I was taught, I try to concentrate on the light and the contrast that is so typical on the porches of these Victorian homes. The vertical is a house just across the street the other is is a small Victorian farm house that I've admired for years as I drive up to Helen. It's on Hwy 115 half way between 400 and Cleveland. It's been abandoned lately so I stopped to get this little reminder before it falls into disrepair. this makes 20 9x12s done— 80 more to go.

Close to home 7/9

Still hotter than Hades and it looks like it's going to stay that way all summer. I went over to the pond at Sweat Mountain and painted this. It's an old friend, being about half way around on my jogging course—guess I've been around it about 4,000 times. While there, I helped a few sweet young girls pull hooks from brim they caught in the dark green waters.

Hot days of summer

I've been keeping up the pace with at least two paintings each weekend. The heat has been terrible for more than a month now an we have quite a bit of summer to go. I will post some of this work but some may never see the light of day. I had a great day on July 2nd up near Mt. Yonah, doing two nice views. One of the mountain and the other just turning around and painting the view looking down the valley. I think two cars went bye all day.

6/26 Along the river at Roswell

Last Sunday I got up and left early, driving to the Chattahoochee river at the crossing in Roswell. Turning right back along the river I stopped a few places before ending up at a small park just north of Wellio Rd. It's a fishing spot and I was delighted by vistas both north and south. I was amused talking to the fisherman all day who appeared to be good at what they did, but I only saw one trout caught all day. They were well acquainted with the location and each other— almost like a weekly book club meeting. In any event, I did the first painting from shore fast a furiously and the second from the deck winding up in time to get home for dinner. The first with a view north is best with better light. The afternoon one shows a few kayakers heading upstream and got a little dark.

Carolyn's Front Door

On Sunday I made good on a promise to paint a picture of my neighbor's house. It was very warm but I stuck it out and did this very focused painting. Poor Bonnie hung with me the whole time.

Market on the Green—Mountain Park Lake

Last Saturday I set up at the park in Mountain Park and sold artwork. It was the first market and they are planning a monthly thing. I did not sell much, but it sure was interesting. I had a table with about 25 or 30 paintings of all shapes and sizes. Most was old stuf, but I also my recent Plein Air from the area in the hopes that someone might "have to have" that painting of their house. Well, no one did, but I did sell some inexpensive prints. I had made them in the last hours just to have something to giveaway. The nice thing was that I had several friends stop by and sit with me plus Penny, the girls, Dan and of course, Coleman. In the end I sat around with Skeeter Roark and some new friends exchanging peaches for prints and drinking some wine while the sun set. It was a nice afternoon in the park along with meeting some new people. I did do this painting while I was there—which was fun while people walked around, wasn't really nervous at all. But —do it again? Not at Mountain Park.
